West Side Story
Racial tension keeps star-crossed lovers Tony and Maria apart in this classic musical adaptation of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet"

This show posed several challenges. I wanted to divide the stage into the Jets' territory and the Sharks' territory, but the stage was simply too small to do that and still leave room for 55 actors to move around. I resolved this by using neutral colors in the set, and changing it with lighting to complement the costume design. This was also my most complex set to date, with many different levels and heights and angles. I designed it to evoke an urban skyline when seen from the audience perspective.
